Kombucha has become very popular because it is natural, tastes great and is full of healthy bacteria. But what a lot of people don’t know is that Kombucha is made from a combination of bacteria culture and yeast. Yes, Lymie ears just perked up, yeast.
This means that if you have Lyme and are being treated for it this greatly raises your chance of candida overgrowth which leads to the very strict diet that most Lyme sufferers are familiar with. I will say some people are totally fine with Kombucha, but some people will notice more air in their tummies and more candida symptoms. If you have an LLMD be sure and ask them about kombucha, but no matter what they say if you are symptomatic avoid it. Also people with certain digestive disorders should also be careful. Personally I have gone through most of my treatment needing to avoid kombucha because it didn’t agree with me, but recently I have been able to get away with having one once and a while.
Here are some alternatives to Kombucha if you want natural probiotics:
Kimchi, Sauerkraut and fermented foods. These are amazing for getting “happy gut” bacteria. Here is a great article: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/06/01/fermented-vegetables.aspx
If you would still like to drink kombuch choose one that is low in sugar (kombuchas can range greatly in sugar content). You can choose some that are as little as 2 grams per serving, while on the other end of the spectrum some are as high as 12 grams per serving (24 per bottle), so be mindful of that.
